Tour description

Snug in the tri-border area, the city of Sombor, along with its surrounding settlements, represents the green jewel of Vojvodina. This oasis of nature, greenery, and Vojvodina's tranquility preserves a rich cultural heritage from over 20 different national communities. Sombor is known as the greenest city in Serbia, with avenues of linden and plane trees forming green tunnels, best experienced on a carriage ride, as in the famous song "The Old Carriage Roams the Streets." Notable figures like Laza Kostić, Milan Konjović, and Veljko Petrović once walked through this city, and today, the most famous Sombor resident is Nikola Jokić.

Start discovering Sombor by visiting the City Museum and the Museum of Danube Swabians. You will be surprised by the wealth of collections that testify to the rich history of this region. Don't miss the gallery of the most famous Sombor painter, Milan Konjović, who bequeathed his paintings to the city with the famous words: "These paintings, my darlings, I lovingly give to my hometown, they belong only to it."

Continue your stroll through the old town core, the main street, and the "venci" (the circular roads) to experience the city's beautiful architecture. Then, in the Park of Heroes, visit the building of the County Hall, which houses the largest oil painting in this part of the Balkans – the painting "The Battle of Senta" by Ferenc Eisenhut. You will be fascinated not only by its beauty but also by the story behind this impressive work.

It's time for lunch! For a true Sombor gastronomic experience, choose one of the restaurants in the city center or perhaps a traditional tavern or farmstead.

It's time for a carriage ride, as Sombor is the only city in Serbia that still has a municipal carriage service. We depart from the famous Carriage Square in the city center, and during the ride, the coachman will share many interesting Sombor stories with you. As true Sombor nobles, you will reach the city beach – Štrand – by carriage. There, the captain will take you on a catamaran ride along the Great Bačka Canal and tell you about the fascinating history of this waterway, which is also known as the lifeblood of the plain.

After exploring the streets of Sombor, we head to Bački Monoštor – a village on the Danube, also known as the European Amazon. This picturesque settlement, with an 800-year history, is still closely connected with the surrounding nature – the forests and waters of the Special Nature Reserve "Upper Danube," and is part of the cross-border UNESCO Biosphere Reserve "Mura-Drava-Danube," affectionately called the "European Amazon." This vast area is a colorful mosaic of forests, rivers, marshes, channels, and rich wildlife, all coexisting in harmony with the local population, forming a single entity.

In Monoštor, you'll be welcomed by hospitable hosts, ready to present their village in the most authentic way. Settle into one of the local apartments or rural guesthouses.

Program: Start the new day slowly, on a bike. Visit the valuable beekeeping family Periškić at the Beekeeping Classroom. The hosts will introduce you to their family tradition of beekeeping and the importance of bees in the functioning of the entire ecosystem. Enjoy the Sombor dialect spoken by the Periškić family, and the experience will be enhanced by tasting honey-based products and homemade honey cakes. Take time to learn about the benefits of the apitherapy chamber – "Njušiona Ferdinand," and enjoy the lavender fields, which are most vivid in May and June. Nearby, master craftsman Ivan will present unique wooden and antler products in his workshop.

Continue biking through Monoštor and reach the center of the village, dominated by the Church of St. Peter and Paul. This rather large church will leave you in awe, especially when you hear the interesting stories tied to this monument of cultural significance. We will also visit the traditional "Mali Bodrog" Ethno-house, where the hostess will show us what life was like in this village a century ago. The house made of clay with a thatched roof, a spacious yard, and homemade specialties like "vremepolov" will take you back to earlier times.

Afterward, we embark on an adventure in nature. Cycling through forest trails is a real pleasure and an opportunity for unexpected encounters with black storks, white-tailed eagles, and red deer... The black stork and white-tailed eagle are symbols of the Upper Danube, protected species, and these forests are home to the largest population of red deer in Serbia. The route leads us to a small tavern by the Danube branch – "Čarda kod Švabe." This charming spot tells its unique story, which the host will share with you while you enjoy the preparation of fish stew, the most famous dish of the European Amazon. Of course, we recommend trying this delicacy for lunch, and be sure to sample fish baked on a traditional "tanjirča." After lunch, take some time to rest and enjoy a boat ride. On the way back to the village, it's recommended to stop at one of the local kafanas for a better connection with the locals.
